Author Spotlight: Lisa Sommers

Unlove Me by Lisa Sommers, BT Urruela, CJC Photography, book cover romance photographer1. How did you get started as an author and what made you want to pursue that field?

As a matter of fact, I never, in my wildest dreams, ever thought of being an author. I used to read an insane number of books and it wasn’t until I became really sick that I just started jotting some stories down on my iPad. Before I knew it, I completed four novella’s. Once I became well again, I figured, what have I got to lose at this point? That’s when I clicked, publish, on Amazon. Then, it just seemed natural to me to keep writing. It’s been nearly three years now.

2. What hurdles have you overcome while striving towards your goals?

I have to say, when I published my first book, it was the reviews that I would constantly look for that would literally drive me insane. Good or bad, or even not receiving reviews, was a hurdle that I think most authors struggle with. I’ve learned to write for me. It’s what makes me happy.

3. Which novel has been your favorite to write and why?

My, Game On trilogy, has been my favorite to write so far. Each book contains female characters that are all so completely different however, each one are very strong-willed, carry-her-own type of women. I think these are types of people that we can all look up to. I try to make them fun-loving and down-to-earth individuals that people can relate to.

4. For those looking to become an author, what advice would you give them?

Edit, edit, edit. As much as you think you have mastered your own masterpiece, several sets of eyes will catch things you were never able to see. Surround yourself with people (writers, editors, photographers, friends, etc.,) who have nothing but your best interests at heart. These are the individuals that will help you stay strong in a world full of difference of opinions. Stay true to who you are. Write stories that come from the heart. Most importantly, write for you.

5. Favorite motto?

Dream big and always shoot for the stars. Stay positive, work hard and make it happen.

6. In one word, how would you describe your writing style?

Relatable.

7. Which author inspires you the most and why?

Oh, wow, I have so many. I have to say, my top five are, Nicholas Sparks, Jodi Ellen Malpas, Liv Morris, Susan Mallery and Silva Day.  Each of these authors have written stories that take my breath away. When you can get sucked into a story that makes you forget the world around you, then there is nothing better than taking a step into that fantasy world and forgetting your worries. These authors have done just that.

8. What is your writing process like?

You mean outside of the characters that speak to me in my head?  LOL.  I usually have a beginning and an ending all planned out however, the characters usually do things amidst a storyline that makes me rethink my whole plan. Lots of late night hours and no sleep can sometimes bring out an unpredictable scene that I normally would never think of writing.

9. Goals for the remainder of the year?

My main goal was to complete Unlove Me, book three in the Game On trilogy and I did just that. The release date is December 3rd.

10. What new projects are you currently working on?

I have several projects on the horizon however, my body needs a much-needed break from writing at the moment. The late-night hours and the pressures of deadlines have taken a toll on me. It’s time to relax with a glass of wine and a good book in my hands.

11. Any final thoughts you would like to share with the CJC Photography readers?

Speaking, not only for myself but other authors as well, we cannot thank readers enough for all their love and support. Leaving Amazon reviews help authors out so much.
