CJC: How did you get started as an author and what made you want to pursue that field?
MF: I actually grew up telling my sister and cousins stories made on the spot. I also wrote two 50k word books in high school with a cowriter/ friend. We wanted to publish but our parents told us we had to wait. I started writing again due to what my friend used to say. She wrote stories because the stories she wanted to read weren’t there.
CJC: What do you find to be the most rewarding and challenging part of being an author and what hurdles have you overcome while striving towards your goals?
MF: Marketing and admin are the bane of my existence. I’m good at coming up with stories… promoting myself not so much. Best part I would say is running into readers at random places and being told how they love your books.
CJC: Which novel has been your favorite to write and why?
MF: It’s a tie between The Forgotten Christmas gift, due to it being my first book and I’d have to say Coach’s Pet which I’m working on now.
CJC: For first time readers of your work, which book would you recommend?
MF: I always give the choice between The Bear Den and The Forgotten Christmas Gift. Each is a start to a series and not everyone’s a big Christmas freak like I am. So I give choices haha.
CJC: If one of your books were made into a movie, which would you select and who would you like to star in it?
MF: That’s an easy one, and readers might not like my answer till February haha. I’d definitely say Coach’s Pet. I’ve had a few friends say I need to turn it into an anime haha. But I’d have Jensen Ackles as the Coach and and Dillon O’Brien as Declan, the Soccer star.
CJC: For those looking to become an author, what advice would you give them?
MF: I’d give the same advise I was given (I’ve also used the advice on people).
Simple “Why Not?”. You can come up with many reasons not to but at the end of the day why not? Worse that can happen is you publish a book, and it’s doesn’t sell but you tried. Best case people like your books. So Why Not?
CJC: If you could co-write a book with any author, who would it be and why?
MF: Oh that’s a hard one, if I was to do fantasy I’d go with Jacklyn Osborn. I loved her Sons of the Fallen series and think it would be a blast working with her.
For contemporary. Lucy Lennox, May Archer, K.M Neuhold, Annabeth Albert, Riley Heart and A.J Truman. They all are able to break my heart and put it back together in 8 hrs. I also feel I could learn a lot from all the authors mentioned.
CJC: Favorite motto?
MF: “Being normal is vastly overrated”- Grandma Aggie (Halloweentown)
CJC: What do you do to overcome writer’s block?
MF: I start writing the next book in my head. Sooner or later the obstacle is removed.
CJC: In one word, how would you describe your writing style?
MF: Found-family. Yes, I know that can be two words. But it’s one of the main aspects of all my books.
CJC: And what is your writing process like?
MF: Seeing the story that’s been running rampant in my head get finished, being out on paper. Knowing the story will impact someone and hopefully be what they need.
CJC: Which do you find harder to do… writing the blurb for your story or selecting the cover?
MF: I always joke that choosing the model is the hardest part. I go two a couple photographer friends to get my pics. And they send me a tone of photos to look through. I’d definitely say finding the right model can be hard. Hehe
CJC: What new projects are you currently working on and what are your goals for the remainder of the year?
MF: I’m working on Coach’s Pet and one other book for next year. So those should be done done by end of year and be released in February and April.
CJC: Any final thoughts you would like to share with the CJC Photography readers?
MF: I write about bears (lumberjacks and big boys not shifters) Christmas and other groups in the gay world. But it’s always found family. So if you want a good found family book try me.
