CJC: How did you get started as an author and what made you want to pursue that field?

HF: I have always enjoyed books. I’ve been an avid reader since I was little and always dreamed of writing a book. ALWAYS! I had tried numerous times but writing long novels were way too overwhelming for me. I started writing short romance stories and LOVE writing them.

CJC: What do you find to be the most rewarding and challenging part of being an author and what hurdles have you overcome while striving towards your goals?

HF: The most rewarding thing is being able to do my own schedule. My kids are growing up fast and I love that I don’t have to miss anything. The most challenging part of being an author is putting yourself out there. At least for me it is.

CJC: Which novel has been your favorite to write and why?

HF: My favorite to write has been the Heroes with Heart series. I love the idea of wounded heroes getting their happily-ever-after.

CJC: For first time readers of your work, which book would you recommend?

HF: Faithful (the first book in the Whiskey Run series) or the Heroes with Heart series.

CJC: If one of your books were made into a movie, which would you select and who would you like to star in it?

HF: Talk about dreams!!! I would love to have my Whiskey Run series made for tv. And for movie star – maybe Reese Witherspoon and Alan Ritchson.

CJC: For those looking to become an author, what advice would you give them?

HF: If you want to be successful, you have to put in the work and be consistent.

Ignore the naysayers and the negative thoughts.

And don’t give up… you can do it!

CJC: If you could co-write a book with any author, who would it be and why?

HF: Diana Palmer! I’ve read every book she’s ever written multiple times! I started reading her when I was younger and I still love all her books. She’s my go-to author.

CJC: Favorite motto?

HF: Keep your head down and write.

It’s so easy to get caught up in comparing yourself to other authors and this author is doing this, so I should be doing it too.

That’s when you keep your head down and write.

CJC: What do you do to overcome writer’s block?

HF: Relax. I come up with my best work when I relax and daydream about what I want to happen in the book.

CJC: In one word, how would you describe your writing style?

HF: Chatty – I like to think it’s friendly and informal.

CJC: Which do you find harder to do… writing the blurb for your story or selecting the cover?

HF: Definitely the Blurb! I do not enjoy blurb writing at all. Now images – I can look at images all day long.

CJC: Which author inspires you the most and why?

HF: I don’t think I can name one. Or even a few. I would hate to leave someone out.

In general, I am inspired by a lot of authors. The ones that give advice and want to help newbies.

The ones with generous hearts and want other authors to succeed (I’m talking to you Writing Instalove group).

The ones that are putting themselves out there, trying new things and seeing what works.

There’s so many authors that inspire me! I am beyond blessed to know a lot of amazing, generous, talented authors.

CJC: What is your writing process like?

HF: My process seems to change a little bit as time goes on. Recently I’ve discovered dictating and have loved doing it. So normally, I write a summary of what the book is about. Then I do a brief outline of what will happen in each chapter. Then I dictate the book. It goes through two rounds of edits and hit publish. (It sounds way easier than it actually is. LOL)

CJC: What new projects are you currently working on and what are your goals for the remainder of the year?

HF: I’m working on my Whiskey Run Sugar series now and I also have a wide cowboy series that I’m working on. I have most of my books planned through June and will have to brainstorm on what I’ll be doing for the 2nd part of the year.

CJC: Any final thoughts you would like to share with the CJC Photography readers?

HF: Thank you Christopher John for the amazing images!  Images definitely help sell books and it’s so nice to not only find beautiful images but to also work with a genuinely nice photographer! 🙂
