Author Spotlight: Wendy Smith

Coming Home by Wendy Smith, Wendy Smith author, BT Urruela, CJC Photography, Florida photographer,  book cover photographer, romance book cover photographer1)      How did you get started as an author and what made you want to pursue that field?
I’ve always made up stories in my head, and when I was younger wanted to be a writer, or more specifically a journalist. Then I got distracted by computers and ended up in IT. When I discovered self publishing, I realized I could give it a go. So I did. 😀

2)      What hurdles have your overcome while striving towards your goals?
I work full time, so finding time to write is always difficult. It means a lot of late nights which can be tiring after a while.

3)      Which novel has been your favorite to write and why?
It’s hard to pick. Probably In a Heartbeat. As I finished the story, a friend of mine went through something similar and it became a lot more personal. That and the main character, Vanessa, is so me. Haha

4)      For those looking to become an author, what advice would you give them?
Enjoy yourself. Don’t get bogged down in people telling you what you should do. If you want to go down the self-publishing route, do it your way, not anyone else’s.

5)      Favorite motto?
Ack I don’t know. The only thing that springs to mind is Live long and prosper, but I think that has something to do with the amount of Star Trek I’ve been watching lately.

6)      In one word, how would you describe your writing style?
My writing style is haphazard. Haha I write out of order and when scenes hit me. But I also like easy reads that don’t get bogged down in plot. I try to make it a story that people will maybe laugh, but also with lot of emotion.

7)      Which author inspires you the most and why?
There are so many. When I first started selling well, I emailed Hugh Howey to thank him for being an inspiration. If I hadn’t read so much about the path he took, I might not have started down the road of publishing myself.

8)      What is your writing process like?
My writing process is to squeeze as many words into as little time as possible. With limited time to write, I think you have to make the most of it!

9)   What new projects are you currently working on?
I’m working on In the End, which is the final book of the Lifetime series. The novella I’m writing will also be part of that series, it’s about Will and Ali, two minor characters in In a Heartbeat. I loved them so much I wanted to know what their story was.
