Author Spotlight: Ashley Hampton

CJC Photography, Boston, book cover photographer, romance novel, Love at Lucky Stables by Ashley Hampton1)      How did you get started as an author and what made you want to pursue that field?

I was talking to a friend about a personal experience, and she said it would make a great book. I laughed and agreed the story was unique. Many, many story ideas later, I wrote Breeze, the first book in the Southern Rock Lyrics series. I’ll keep writing while I have stories to tell.

2)      What hurdles have your overcome while striving towards your goals?

The indie world is tough, but I’m my worst critic and my biggest obstacle. My biggest hurdles have been self-imposed. I have a full-time business I run by myself, in addition to writing. I’ve recently had to accept I can’t crank out as many books per year as I’d like. I want to do more, but quality is more important to me than quantity.

3)      Which novel has been your favorite to write and why?

Love at Lucky Stables, my first cover collaboration with CJC Photography, was a lot of fun. The characters, Emily and Shane, aren’t tied into a series, so I could let them do pretty much whatever they wanted to without having to fit them into a predetermined box. Plus the first half of the story was released in the Getting Lucky anthology, which was a collaboration between myself and eight other romance authors with the proceeds benefitting the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI).

4)      For those looking to become an author, what advice would you give them?

Keep writing.

Build relationships with other authors and readers.

Be kind – to everyone. “Little” people sometimes become “BIG” people.

5)      Favorite motto?

I love motivational quotes. I have them everywhere, and I post them regularly on social media.

One of my favorites is from Kurt Cobain (and no, I wasn’t a Nirvana fan back in the day) –

“They laugh at me because I’m different; I laugh at them because they’re all the same.”

In the end, I just want to be me. I know I’m different, and I relish in that difference.

6)      In one word, how would you describe your writing style?

Simple.

7)      Which author inspires you the most and why?

Kaylee Ryan is one of my inspirations. She is classy, kind, and writes good stories.

8)      What is your writing process like?

I don’t really have a set process. I don’t write in the same spot, and I don’t have the same music or drink or snack. Sometimes I type on the computer, sometimes I hand write in a notebook. Because I need this to be more fun to me, I try to be more free spirited about it. I’d like to have more of a daily routine when I write, but I haven’t been able to make that happen. Yet.

9)      Goals for the remainder of the year?

I will finish the Southern Rock Lyrics series; I’m working on book 3 now and will start book 4 immediately after. I will publish the entire Love at Lucky Stables story this summer. And maybe have some fun with some new projects…

10)   What new projects are you currently working on?

In addition to what I said above, I am plotting a MC series that will hopefully debut late fall/early winter. For now, it’ll be at least three books. I’m happy to say all three covers thus far have been purchased – all from CJC Photography. The series is going to be raw, rough, and raunchy — definitely not the typical MC romance.

11)   Any final thoughts you would like to share with the CJC Photography readers?
