Masmovil Vodafone Agreement

As El Espanol points out, one plus one is not always equal to two. In both the fixed and mobile market and converging services, there are significant overlaps between Vodafone and Masmovil`s customer bases. The fixed telephony market is further complicated by the fact that Masmovil offers fibre-based services through a wholesale agreement with Orange, whereas the mobile pair would have had more frequencies than is allowed, whereas this could be a possibility for the regulator to admit a new fourth player if that were the case. Or perhaps, more precisely, if the EU wishes. Madrid, September 6, 2018.- Vodafone and the MASMOVIL Group have agreed to share 1.9 million Fibre-To-The-Home (FTTH) connections. The agreement will be phased in over the next four years, improving the optimization and efficiency of the use of fibre optic networks in Spain. “This agreement helps optimize and streamline the use of fibre optic networks in Spain and will enable us to offer our customers ultra-fast broadband services more efficiently,” said Antonio Coimbra, CEO of Vodafone Spain. According to MASMOVIL, Vodafone`s 942,000 households covered by the agreement will be commercially available from December 2018. Including these connections, MASMOVIL will reach 5.4 million homes, surpassing its goal of reaching 5.1 million this year with its own fibre optic network. At the end of June 2018, MASMOVIL`s fibre-optic services reached 13 million homes. Fernando Castro fernando.castro@masmovil.com “I hope this agreement with Vodafone is the beginning of a fruitful relationship for both of us. Expanding our fibre optic footprint allows us to provide excellent service to more customers,” said Meinrad Spenger, CEO of MASMOVIL Group.

Masmovil CEO Meinrad Spenger (pictured) dismissed speculation about an attempt to acquire Vodafone Group, calling the rumours more stunning than reality in an interview with Spanish business daily Expansion. Vodafone surprisingly declined a comment on Monday. “MasMovil has had no interaction with Vodafone regarding a possible business transaction,” the company said in a statement. El Economista, citing sources with knowledge of the situation, said on Friday that Vodafone had begun discussions with the three buyout funds that recently took over MasMovil.
